    No one wants to see a repeat of last summer’s riots in London. And the Government has been exploring the underlying issues behind those involved in the rioting.

    Government expert behaviour advisor, Charlie Taylor, produced a report that was commissioned in response to the riots. The report found widespread failings in how children with a history of serious behaviour issues were dealt with. More than one in 10 of the young people brought before the courts after the riots had been permanently excluded from school.

    The government’s investigation into truancy has urged schools to identify patterns of absence earlier. With SIMS, schools can monitor attendance more effectively and be alerted to when they need to intervene. 

    Behaviour Tsar Charlie Taylor was asked by Education Secretary Michael Gove to look at the issue of school attendance in the wake of England's riots last September.

  10. New survey reveals where academies seek advice

    A survey of schools by Capita last month revealed that 77% sought information from other schools when converting or considering converting to an academy.

    The survey was undertaken to mark the launch of a series of nationwide free events, where school leaders and senior figures in the education landscape – such as Sir David Bell, the former permanent secretary at the DfE – discuss the opportunities and realities associated with the switch to academy status and the changing education scene.
