Phil Neal - Managing Director
"I realised that every school’s management information had the potential to drive whole school improvement."

Phil Neal
Managing Director, Capita SIMS
SIMS started as a germ of an idea which slowly and steadily developed into a resource I am very proud of. It began to emerge some 30 years ago when, as a teacher, I realised that the computers being introduced to schools could save teachers substantial amounts of time writing school reports but that required the pupil and staff records to be "computerised".
Shortly afterwards we had systems in place for dealing with attendance, exam entries, assessment, timetabling and finance. Since that time, SIMS products and services have been at the forefront of educational MIS developments, responding to the evolving needs of schools and academies throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as internationally. SIMS over the years has developed into a really important tool for driving school improvement.
I take real pleasure in keeping in touch with SIMS customers as it’s the most effective way to understand the pressures facing school and academy leaders. We’re focused on developing and improving our products and services continually, to ensure our customers can be confident that SIMS is tailored to, and anticipates, their needs. In the last 18 months we have produced outstanding products such as SIMS Learning Gateway, Partnership Exchange, InTouch, Discover and SOLUS, all of which are making a difference in how schools store and share vital information.
I’m also particularly proud of the recent increase in the number of schools and academies recognising how SIMS can assist them in raising attainment. By using SIMS Assessment to track and examine pupil progress information, schools are releasing the power of data they already hold on their own systems, making SIMS work even harder for them.
