“It looks like a user friendly app rather than a website!” This was the feedback we received from schools who visited us at Bett this year, where we showcased the SIMS Learning Gateway (SLG) spring release. I’m delighted with this feedback, which shows how SIMS Learning Gateway has developed into a tool focused on usability and accessibility, not just data.

Delivering a better user experience
Workshops around the country, forums and direct feedback from individual schools told us that you needed a new, easier to understand interface that focused more on user experience, rather than complicated data centric views. The data centric web parts are still available for those of you who want to drill down into the data but we’ve introduced a new, interactive graphical view with the spring release.
SLG on the go…
In common with many schools, Sale Grammar School has invested in iPads and tablets. Its ICT Manager Simon Rowlands was keen for the new SLG design to work well on their devices. Continuing the SLG development from autumn – attendance maximised for tablets – we’ve ensured that the graphical view and widgets are touch sensitive and “swipeable” – ideal for use on a tablet.
We’ve not forgotten parents and pupils either
Our schools tell us that parents would like to access SLG more regularly but after a long day at work, it’s hard to face opening the laptop again. Many of us use our phones by default for email, Facebook, eBay, etc. so why not get summary information for your child? From spring – and at no additional charge - parents can!
In the spring release, we’ve introduced a smartphone browser view for your pupils and their parents. This has been quite difficult to implement across multiple SharePoint, but our aim was to let parents and pupils get that glimpse of summary information on the move. The new smartphone browser view is intelligent enough to know what type of device is being used to give the relevant view.
We’ve enhanced the original design so that parents don’t need to leave the SLG browser view to see your school’s phone number or email if they need to contact your school, they don’t need to leave the SLG browser view to find your school’s contact information.
What’s next for the Gateway?
The next step to make access easier for you will be in the autumn release this year, when we will be re-vamping our Hosted SIMS Learning Gateway login page. Following your request, we’ll be removing the need for you to enter the domain (hosted\) when logging into or re-setting your password for access into our Hosted SLG.
We will also provide auto reminders for security questions and answers to make the whole password re-set process easier, whilst retaining appropriate security and meeting the ICO guidelines.
We’re really excited about the future of the Gateway and look forward to sharing more insight with you.
