e-Learning & Information Management (eLIM) is a traded unit within Somerset County Council, offering a wide variety of support services for all education providers including schools, academies, Early Years providers, childcare settings and local authorities.
As part of eLIM’s support for schools, they provide training on SIMS to ensure their schools are making the best use of the system. For the last five years, eLIM’s SIMS training has involved using virtual machines. The virtual machines are installed and run on individual machines – one per delegate.
In October 2016, eLIM trialled Capita SIMS’ new Virtual Training Environment. The SIMS Virtual Training Environment (VTE) is based in Microsoft Azure and offers easy access to SIMS & FMS for training purposes without the need to maintain a system. Simon Wood, MIS Manager, and Alistair Gregory, MIS Support Officer, have been key in the implementation of the SIMS VTE. So far, they have used the VTE twice for training and have found it a success.
Simon and Alistair immediately saw a difference in the time it took to get up and running with SIMS. “It’s a really simple process,” says Simon. “You go to the web address, log in and then you just go into SIMS as you would normally.”
